The art of ripening pears

PoiresMures2_3740-webPick the pears before they fall and let them ripen for a week or two behind a window. From hard and tasteless, the eating pears below became juicy and sweet.

Fruit picked in a Southfields garden on 6th Oct 2013. Variety: close to a Comice.

These pears are very big, some weighting as much as 400g. They tend to fall before ripening, get bruised, and finish in the bin. By harvesting early, we saved them.
