Our national French non-profit organisation Les Croqueurs de pommes aimed at safeguarding heritage fruit varieties met from 13 to 14 April 2024.
I have just published a short post about our spring meeting in the Croqueurs de pommes du Cantal‘s blog. Here is my translation of it into English:
Spring meeting
The 64 local sections of our 8500-membre national movement (link in French) gathered from 13 to 14 April 2024 for the first of our two annual meetings. After the Croqueurs de pommes of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in Aix en Provence en 2023, the Vienne’s section (in French) hosted the event in Poitiers. As always, we shared a lot of news and insights beyond our board of trustees’s spring meeting and annual General Meeting.
During a conversation among delegates of the Cantal and Puy de Dôme Croqueurs de pommes sections, we discussed an historic collaboration. After World War 2, INRAE Clermont-Ferrand, based in the Puy de Dôme, sent grafting material to populate the British National Fruit Collection with French varieties. As a result, the Reinette de Maurs apple from Cantal for instance has been present in Brogdale’s conservation orchard in Kent since 1948. Fruit heritage conservation is a long-term endeavour!
